LECTURE: HOW TO EFFECTIVELY PREPARE A RESEARCH DATA MANAGEMENT PLAN
On Thursday, 5 February 2026, at 11.00 you are invited to the online lecture How to Effectively Prepare a Research Data Management Plan. Lecturer will be Dr. Ana Slavec (UP FAMNIT and UP IAM). The event will be streamed online via Zoom (https://upr-si.zoom.us/s/62044295454, Meeting ID: 620 4429 5454). The lecture will be held in Slovenian.
In this lecture the importance and practical aspects of preparing Data Management Plans (DMPs) will be presented, which are increasingly required by research funders, including the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency. A DMP is a key component of the research process, as it provides an overview of data management procedures, ensures long-term preservation of data, and supports broad accessibility in line with the FAIR principles.
The lecture will begin with an overview of why research funders are increasingly strict in requiring DMPs, what information researchers need to include, and how a DMP develops throughout the entire life cycle of a research project. The central part will focus on a practical demonstration of preparing a plan based on concrete examples. It will show how to address issues related to managing sensitive data, selecting appropriate repositories, documentation practices, data organisation, and defining access levels. The most common challenges researchers face when completing such plans will also be highlighted. In the final part, various templates and forms used by funders will be presented. The lecture thus connects the funders’ theoretical requirements with practical examples that can help researchers plan and share their research data more effectively.
Dr. Ana Slavec is employed at the University of Primorska, partly as an assistant professor at the Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies, and partly as a research fellow at the Andrej Marušič Institute, InnoRenew CoE research group. She holds a degree in sociology – social informatics and a PhD in statistics, both from the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ljubljana, where she worked as a research assistant at the Centre for Social Informatics and later at the Social Science Data Archive. Her dissertation focused on improving the wording of survey questions using linguistic resources. During her studies, she began writing and co‑editing a blog that received an award for excellence in statistical reporting. At the University of Primorska, she teaches statistics and contributes to the implementation of the national open science action plan, as well as to the open science working group of the T4EU university alliance, and she is trained as a data steward. Her research focuses on the use of survey methods in the field of sustainable construction, and she leads the project Social‑psychological aspects of long‑term decision‑making of private forest and home owners (SLOTH). She is the president of the Slovenian Open Science Community (SSOZ) and a member of the open science working group at the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency.

This is the twelfth lecture in the OSUP series – Open Science at the University of Primorska. The event is organised by the University of Primorska as part of the project SPOZNAJ (Support for the Implementation of Open Science Principles in Slovenia). If you have any questions you can contact Dr. Ana Slavec, the editor of the OSUP series.
