Research Data Management in Open Science

Research Data Management in Open Science

Research data can be defined as factual records (numerical scores, textual records, images and sounds) used as primary sources for scientific research, and that are commonly accepted in the scientific community as necessary to validate research findings (OECD, 2007).

Research Data Management (RDM) is an important part of the research process in the research data life cycle (planning, searching, collecting, processing, analysing, storing, sharing, archiving and reuse of data).

Advantages of research data management:

  • higher level of visibility and citation;
  • transparency and quality of research;
  • preservation of research integrity;
  • meeting the requirements of funders and publishers;
  • data backup and recovery;
  • ensuring

Research Data Management Plan (RDMP) it is a key part of research data management, which includes all working documents from the beginning to the end of the project and also after the project has been completed. Research data management plan is a living document that is continuously updated during the project. It is a mandatory part of the projects supported by Horizon Europe and European Research Council. It is recommended that the substantive part of the research data management plan includes:

  • description of the data;
  • method of collecting and creating data;
  • information about metadata;
  • ethical and legal compliance;
  • copyright and intellectual property rights;
  • costs;
  • long-term storage and backup plan;
  • data access and security;
  • data sharing;
  • information on persistent identifiers (PID);
  • risk assessment;
  • restrictions on data sharing.

Tools for preparing a Research Data Management Plan:

  • ARGOS: simplifies the management, validation, monitoring and maintenance of data management plans;
  • Data Management Expert Guide (DMEG): a tool for preparing research data according to FAIR principles;
  • Data Stewardship Wizard (DSW): offers pre-made templates for research data management plans;
  • DataWiz: a research data management tool to assist in the preparation of research data;
  • DMP Templates: contains a collection of suggestions and instructions for preparing research data management plans;
  • DMP Tool: a tool for preparing research data management plans, mostly including templates tailored to the requirements of funders and institutions in America;
  • DMP Use Case Project: a collection of management plans prepared within the framework of Horizon 2020 projects;
  • DMPonline: a tool for preparing research data management plans, which also includes proposals adapted to the requirements of the European Commission;
  • EasyDMP: a service that simplifies the process of creating a research data management plan;
  • Research Data Management Organiser (RDMO): research data management organiser.
