Access

1. Open Access: immediate free access to the entire content of publications on the World Wide Web and copyright management. The author retains the copyright and authorizes the publisher to publish. Permitted and unauthorized use is usually marked with a Creative Commons (CC) license, which is chosen by the author or publisher, taking into consideration the conditions of the funder.

  • Green Open Access: indicates the storage of the author’s final, peer-reviewed version of the article, which has been accepted for publication in a subscription scientific journal, in an institutional repository. In the event that the author has transferred the copyright to the publisher, the latter must allow him to save the peer-reviewed or non-peer-reviewed version of the article in the repository. Publishers’ open access policies with license summaries are collected and analysed on the Open Policy Finder website.
  • Gold Open Access: refers to publication in open access journals or monographs that allow access to research results without subscription. The author retains the copyright and allows further use, usually marked with CC licenses. Publishing in Gold Open Access usually requires payment of a publication processing charge (APC).
  • Diamond Open Access: non-profit instant open access model that does not charge a subscription for access or publication. The author retains copyright and permits the sharing and reuse of the scientific work. Publication for commercial purposes is generally not permitted. Funds for operation are provided by publishers through payment for public service, sponsorships, donations, crowdfunding and fund-raising within the framework of various initiatives.

2. Free Access: the entire text of the publication is freely available on the World Wide Web, but in this case the author transfers the copyright to the publisher.

Journals
  • Hybrid journals: subscription journals, which enable the open publication of individual articles on the World Wide Web upon payment of a publication processing fee (APC). The author retains copyright and permits further use under the terms of the selected license.
  • Postprint: author’s final peer-reviewed version of the article that has been accepted for publication in a scientific journal. Includes all editorial edits without publisher graphics and formatting.
  • Preprint: author’s original version of the article submitted to the journal for publication prior to the peer review process.
  • Embargo: a certain period of time during which the entire content of the publication is inaccessible, although it may already be stored in the repository (the content of the publication is not available to the public).

Charge
  • Article Processing Charge (APC): cost that is charged to authors or institution for an open access publication in a subscription journal. It allows articles to be fully accessible without embargo.
  • Book Processing Charge (BPC): cost that is charged to authors or the institution for the publication of the monograph in open access.
  • Chapter Processing Charge (CPC) or Book Chapter Processing Charge (BCPC): cost that is charged to authors or institution for the publication of a chapter in an open access monograph.
