Lecture: OpenAlex: Catalog of Open Research Publications

LECTURE: OPENALEX: CATALOG OF OPEN RESEARCH PUBLICATIONS

On Thursday, 17 April 2025, at 9.00 you are invited to the online lecture OpenAlex: catalog of open research publications. Lecturer will be Prof. Dr. Vladimir Batagelj (UP FAMNIT). The event will be streamed online via Zoom (https://upr-si.zoom.us/s/92265845419, Meeting ID: 922 6584 5419). The lecture will be held in Slovenian.

OpenAlex is a fully open catalog of global research publications that was launched in January 2022. It is named after the ancient Library of Alexandria. It was created by a non-profit organization OurResearch that also maintains it. OpenAlex indexes more than twice as many scientific works as the leading market services Web of Science and Scopus. The entire knowledge network and its source code are open and freely accessible through data snapshots, an easy-to-use API, and a web-based user interface. In addition to free access, it also allows access from user programs and thus more complex bibliographic analyses. First, we will learn about the OpenAlex service and some basic use cases. In the following, we will demonstrate the use of the OpenAlex2Pajek software library (in R) for building bibliographic networks. More information is available at https://github.com/bavla/OpenAlex.

Prof. Dr. Vladimir Batagelj is a Slovenian mathematician and computer scientist, known primarily for his contributions in the fields of network theory, large-scale network analysis, and social networks. He is an emeritus professor at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, University of Ljubljana, a member of the Institute of Mathematics, Physics and Mechanics and the Department of Information Sciences and Technologies at UP FAMNIT. He is also the author of numerous scientific articles and books covering topics such as network analysis, algorithms for processing large datasets, and network visualization. He is considered one of the world’s leading experts in network analysis, and his work has had a broad impact on both scientific research and practical applications.
