LECTURE: IMAGING EQUIPMENT IN OPEN SCIENCE PUBLICATIONS: BETWEEN THE HAMMER OF COPYRIGHT LAW AND THE ANVIL OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY KNOWLEDGE
On Thursday, 4 December 2025, at 13.00 you are invited to the online lecture Imaging equipment in open science publications: between the hammer of copyright law and the anvil of information technology knowledge. Lecturers will be Prof. Dr. Jonatan Vinkler (director of the University of Primorska, University Library) and ing. Primož Orešnik (University of Primorska Press). The event will be streamed online via Zoom (https://upr-si.zoom.us/s/68511632951, Meeting ID: 685 1163 2951). The lecture will be held in Slovenian.
With the introduction of e-formats in the publication of scientific texts, visual equipment (pictures, graphs, displays, diagrams, etc.) has become a semantically completely equal partner to the text of a scientific work. However, the author does not usually create all the visual material himself, but rather, to some extent, takes it from already existing publications. In doing so, he faces two sets of challenges: 1) copyright issues and the rights to republish an existing work, and 2) technical procedures that result in visual equipment that is of sufficient quality for publication.
Therefore, the lecture/workshop will include an introduction to copyright law and a practical application with a demonstration of working with software:
1) capturing visual equipment (e.g. taking pictures, scanning, screen capture),
2) exporting to formats,
3) converting formats,
4) the basics of processing visual equipment.
