OPEN SCIENCE: DATA STEWARDSHIP
From Monday, 14th of October, to Friday, 18th of October 2024, the introductory phase of the Data Stewardship training took place in Vienna. The program will take place in virtual environment until summer 2025 and it’s one of the first licensed programes for the data stewards globally. The training was organised by the University of Vienna in collaboration with experts from other leading universities in the field of open science and open access.
Director of the University Library of the University of Vienna, Mag. Dr. Andreas Brandtner, MSc MBA MAS has welcomed the participants. The oldest university library in the German-speaking area, founded in 1365, and at the same time the largest library in Austria, hosted 27 participants from various European countries, only two of them from Slovenia (University Library of the University of Primorska and University Library of the University of Maribor).
During the first week of the training, participants learned about the foundations of open science and gained insights into legislation, management, ethics and integrity in the field of open science. A key role is played by the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), which allow free access to research data for the general public and the protection of copyright through various licences. The role of the data steward is to support higher quality and more transparent scientific research process, while respecting the autonomy of the author.
A University of Primorska, which will have its own data stewards in the future, is already active in the field of open science, not just on national level, e.g. project SPOZNAJ (Supporting the implementation of Open Science principles in Slovenia), but also on international level through the Transform4Europe – alliance, which consists of 11 European universities.
The training funds for Data Stewardship are financed by the T4EU project.
