LECTURE: BETWEEN THE HAMMER OF PRODUCTION AND THE ANVIL OF FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY: FORECASTING, DISTRIBUTION, INVENTORIES AND STATE INCENTIVES FOR PUBLISHING IN THE SLOVENIAN LANGUAGE
On Thursday, 21 May 2026, at 13:00, we invite you to the online lecture Between the Hammer of Production and the Anvil of Financial Sustainability: Forecasting, Distribution, Inventories and State Incentives for Publishing in the Slovenian Language. The lecture will be given by Prof. Dr. Jonatan Vinkler (UP FHŠ and UP UK). The event will be held in the Slovenian language via Zoom (https://upr-si.zoom.us/j/65598648102, Meeting ID: 655 9864 8102).
The lecture presents an analysis of the economic, legal and operational challenges of the publishing business in contemporary Slovenia. It focuses on the tension between the necessary costs of production and the requirement for financial sustainability, emphasizing three key pillars: pre-calculation (the “magic equation of survival”), distribution and inventory management. The aim is to equip editors, publishers and future professionals with tools for rational planning that ensures a positive return on each reproduced author’s unit, while taking into account legal obligations and market realities. The lecture is based on the principle that a book is primarily an economic enterprise, the success of which is determined by the reader as the ultimate payer of all costs.
The lecture will cover the following topics:
- Book as an economic enterprise: a refresher of basic concepts;
- “Magic equation of survival”: the foundation of pre-calculation;
- Distribution: obligations to the state and the path to the buyer;
- Inventories and pitfalls: depreciation, tax obligations and a practical example;
- Purpose of state support;
- Financial instrument of support;
- Institutions and their programs;
- Important recommendations for applicants.
