Publishing research data is becoming an increasingly common requirement from research funders and scientific journals. Evaluation and assessment are key activities that shape the research system, ensuring both the quality of research and the reliability or trust in research results. At the same time, evaluation is a crucial factor that can either enable or hinder research careers, thereby significantly influencing a researcher’s day-to-day work. This lecture will present how we evaluate and assess research activities within our academic system. It will outline various aspects and methods of assessment, as well as the underlying values. Finally, it will offer an overview of upcoming changes, including a detailed look at the European Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA).
